This exhibition guide is for an exhibit of the Cook/Forster Collection of the Georg August University of Göttingen that was held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts on February 23 to May 14, 2006.

Comprising several hundred artifacts collected by Captain James Cook (1728-79) during his second and third voyages of exploration in the Pacific Ocean, this exhibition explores the vibrant cultures encountered by Cook in the eighteenth century, at a time when they were still intact. It is extremely rare to have the opportunity to experience actual works made by the eighteenth century inhabitants of such island groups as Aotearoa (New Zealand), Vanuatu (New Hebrides), New Caledonia, Tonga, Tahiti and the Society Islands, the Marquesas, Hawaiʻi, and the Northwest Cost of America.
