This set of notecards featuring specimens from the Bishop Museum Herbarium Pacificum is published in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Isabella Aiona Kauakea Abbott. Known as the “First Lady of Limu,” Dr. Abbott (1919–2010) was the first Native Hawaiian woman to earn a PhD in science, becoming the leading expert on Pacific marine algae.

Dr. Abbott was professor emerita at Stanford University and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She was also an honorary research associate at Bishop Museum and a member of its Board of Directors. The limu featured on each of these notecards have a special connection to Dr. Abbott and her work.
