Bishop Museum Press would like to mahalo the numerous heartfelt voices that reached us in August 2023 requesting the timely reprinting of Mokuʻula, Maui’s Sacred Island. Following the devastating wildfires that impacted Maui, these calls from all over Hawaiʻi and beyond rang clear with the collective need for continued education and preservation of Lahaina’s deep history.

Written by ethnologist P. Christiaan Klieger, and published in 1998, Mokuʻula, Maui’s Sacred Island documents the political and cultural history of the wahi pana and sacred island of Mokuʻula as well as the efforts of the Lahaina community to recover and preserve this special place of Native Hawaiian heritage.

With the generous financial support of the Dolores Furtado Martin Foundation, the Press took swift action to produce both a paperback edition and a digital edition (EPUB fixed layout) so that this work may reach all those that need this invaluable resource at this time.

Bishop Museum has pledged half of the profits from the sale of this book toward supporting efforts in Lahaina, Maui. The remaining amount will fund future reprints.

If you are able, we humbly ask that you please continue to support Lahaina through your donations of resources and time to the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement Kākoʻo Maui Fund, the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund, and Maui United Way Maui Fire and Disaster Relief.
